Your walking down the street and you walk pass a person who has skin that is not white. In America it's easy to look at someone's skin color and assume you know who they are. Because here in America, we have created a system of race that holds more important to society than ethnicity or nationality, so for every person of color we say they must be African American since they aren't white. Well WRONG. Boston, Massachusetts is a very diverse city. In Boston alone there were calculated to be over 44,000 residents whose ethnicity would be one from the Caribbean in 2007. In 2009 in the United States there were 3.5 million immigrants from the Caribbean not including their American born children. The top Caribbean islands were Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica. Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. All these people when filling out applications, walking down the street, or in their classrooms at schools are told they are to be African Americans. That isn't right. Both the Caribbean and African American culture are very rich. Cultures full of history, music, language, food, customs, and values that set them apart and make them all special. Though they are different, they all originate from the same place, and the base of their cultures come from Africa.
